After the 2025 wildfires, something had to change.
In the region of Cova da Beira, Portugal, flames left behind more than burnt trees. They damaged soil life, increased erosion & deepened drought vulnerability. But fire does not have to be the end of the story. Ash2Soil was born from a simple question:
What if communities could transform ashes into living soil?
What is Ash2Soil?
A 12-month program that brings together science, community action & art to restore fire-affected landscapes. Across four seasonal gatherings, citizens, scientists & artists work side by side to:
Restore soil health
Enhance Biodiversity & Prevent Erosion
Strengthen Community Resilience
Turn Regeneration into Cultural Expression

The four seasons of regeneration
SPRING
Awakening the Soil
Agroforestry lines with food trees & groundcovers restore soil and biodiversity
SUMMER
From Burnt Biomass to Biochar
Fire-prevention biomass becomes biochar, enriching soil & retaining water.
AUTUMN
Water & Stability
Water-retention structures reduce erosion & improve soil hydration
WINTER
Native Forest Negeneration
Native trees like oaks, ashes & chestnuts are planted to anchor the ecosystem
What We Do
Science made accessible
Ash2Soil makes soil science understandable, visible & actionable. We do this by:
-
Sharing accessible soil literacy materials
-
Analysing soil health before & after the interventions
-
Comparing fire-affected areas with unburned control plots
-
Monitoring microbiome recovery & soil vitality
-
Sharing open-access fact sheets & transparent data
Because knowledge empowers communities to care for their land.

When Science Meets Art
Every seasonal gathering becomes a space where ecology & creativity meet.
Inspired by field actions & scientific discoveries, participants create artworks using natural pigments, charcoal from burnt wood, handmade paper & printmaking techniques.
These creations grow into:
-
A travelling immersive mural
-
A video-art installation
-
A documentary
-
Public exhibitions in Portugal & across Europe
Through art, soil becomes more than data. It becomes memory, identity and a shared cultural story.
Community Regeneration
Ash2Soil turns local action into lasting impact & combining hands-on restoration with European-scale replication. Building on the grassroots initiative “Mãos na Terra,” we create a model that can be adapted across fire-affected regions. We empower communities through:
-
Seasonal volunteer actions
-
Open-access tools & training – toolkits, datasets for municipalities, schools, and NGOs.
-
Multiplier events – connect European actors and share knowledge for model replication.
Local knowledge meets regenerative practice and every action builds long-term stewardship.

Environmental. Social. Cultural. Educational. Regeneration.
