With Farm to Fork Strategy (2020-2030) European Commission created FITNESS CHECK Roadmap, a project to assess animal Welfare EU legal framework policies existing until 2020 and it will contribute to defining actions and/or new legal frameworks.
The European Commission has presented ambitious actions related to animal welfare, with the adoption of Farm to Fork strategy. One of these actions was the "Fitness Check", an evaluation project of the EU legislation on the welfare of farmed animals.
The purpose of Fitness Check is to help assess the importance of the current legislative framework, that consisting in five EU directives (Council Directive 98/58/EC of 20 July 1998 concerning the protection of animals kept for farming purposes, Council Directive 1999/74/EC of 19 July 1999 laying down minimum standards for the protection of laying hens, Council Directive 2007/43/EC of 28 June 2007 laying down minimum rules for the protection of chickens kept for meat production, Council Directive 2008/120/EC of 18 December 2008 laying down minimum standards for the protection of pigs, Council Directive 2008/119/EC of 18 December 2008 laying down minimum standards for the protection of calves) and two Council Regulation (Council Regulation (EC) No 1/2005 of 22 December 2004 on the protection of animals during transport and Council Regulation (EC) No 1099/2009 of 24 September 2009 on the protection of animals at the time of killing).
The "Fitness Check" will review the period from the adoption of each legal act until the year 2020 covering all EU Member States.
Although not a binding instrument, the Fitness Check results will be part of the farm to fork strategy follow-up and will help reflect on what additional actions (legislative and non-legislative) may be needed to align the EU's animal welfare objectives with the sustainability goals of the Green Deal and the Farm to Fork Strategy.
